Electrospinning well-aligned fiber arrays through a modified collector
Through electrospinning, aligned fiber arrays can be obtained and have many potential applications: substrate of cell culture, tissue engineering scaffold, reinforcenent materials, and electronics. Eight groups of aligned electrospun fiber arrays were simultaneously fabricated by using a rather simple collector composed of eight stainless steel bars intersecting in the center. Under the optical microscope and SEM, uniaxially well-aligned submicrofibers were observed spanning across two adjacent bars. Hie overall appearance was like a spider web. Effects of applied voltage and collection time on fiber a-lignment were preliminarily studied. Longer aligned fibers were obtained with the increase of applied voltage. A larger production and an increased degree of alignment were gained with increased collection time. Hie experimental results indicate that this method is not only facile, inexpensive, and productive, but can also endow the fibrous array with a high degree of alignment.
