Wettability and its ageing of plasma-treated acrylic fibers
Acrylic fibers are treated by oxygen glow-discharge plasma to promote surface wettability. However, the hydrophilic character obtained tends to decrease with time elapsed during post-treatment storage, due to molecular movement in the polymer. It was found that the ageing process is strongly affected by the crystallinity and the environment in which the samples are stored. Increasing crystallinity reduces molecular movement of polymer chain. A hydrophobic environment and high temperature can promote faster recovery of the original properties. A hydrophilic environment can prevent the surface from losing the polar character obtained from the plasma treatment. Moreover, the ageing process is reversible since the surface character of the treated fibers changes when the environment changes.
