Investigation in the swelling and disintegration of wool fiber in formic acid
The swelling behavior of wool fiber in concentrated formic acid solution as well as the disintegration process of the swelled wool fiber are investigated under shearing force and ultrasonic ca-vatition. The result indicates that formic acid is an effective swelling reagent for wool fiber. Wool fiber swelled about 80% of its original diameter in 98% formic acid solution. The swelled wool fiber is separated into its histological components by mechanical forces. Cortical cells about 3~5μm in diameter. and about 100μM in length, macrofibril about 0.3~0.5μm in diameter and about 30~40μm in length were observed.
