Surface modification on polyester (PET) fabric treated by dielectric barrier discharges (DBD)
In order to investigate how the existence of moisture affects dielectric barrier discharges (DBD)treatment, polyester fabrics were treated by argon and oxygen plasmas using DBD at different moisture conditions. The DBD treatment etched the surfaces and the roughness of the fabric surfaces was modified. It was shown that the surface roughness were higher for the wet group than that of other groups. After plasma treatment, the 0/C ratios increased. This increase shows that new oxygen-containing groups were formed on the fabric surfaces, and the wet group had the higher O/C ratio. It was found that there was no significant effect on wettability gained immediately after treatment for different moisture conditions. In the aging testing, it was proved that the durable stability on surface was changed when the treated samples were placed in the ambient air. The wettability of DBD treated fabrics had no remarkable change after 2 weeks in ambient air.
