Synthesis of the derivatives of chitosan and its blend with polyacrylonitrile

This study dealt with the synthesis of the derivatives of chitosan (CS) and its blend with polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Firstly the quaternary ammonium derivative of chitosan, N-(2-hydroxy)propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) were synthesized respectively. The former was prepared through a reaction of glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride ( GTMAC) and CS, and the latter was obtained through the reaction of chloroaceuc acid and CS. Results indicated that the degree of substitution (DS) and yield of HTCC increased with the reaction time, yield of HTCC prepared with higher molecular weight of Cs was higher than that with lower molecular weight of CS, while HTCC prepared with water as solvent has lower yield and poor solubility. DS of CMC was greatly dependent on the composition of reacting reagent, reaction time and method of adding alkali. DS of CMC was higher with the two-step method of adding alkali than that of one-step method. Low alkali method was approached to further improve the synthesis of CMC, in which no concentrated alkali was used. A series of blend films of PAN, PAN/CS, PAN/CMC and PAN/HTCC were prepared by using CS and the synthesized HTCC and CMC under various conditions. The miscibility . and drawablity of the film samples were investigated. Results indicated that the HTCC and CMC were resolvable in NaSCN solution and they showed a good miscibility between PAN and HTCC ( CMC). The good miscibility and a certain drawability of the blend film suggested the possibility of solution spinning of the blend of PAN and HTCC or CMC.
