Interrelations Between University Sport and Overlapping Governmental Policies

Originally university sport was a product of civil society. When students sport was born, at the end of the 19th century university education was mainly the privilege of male, upper class, or at least upper-middle class young people. Consequently, university sport emerged as a leisure activity of upper class men. We can also add that at the beginning-in many respects-it was the terrain only of white upper class males. They founded the first university sports clubs and federations, they made decisions on sporting regulations, rules, and their financed their own sporting activity in the spirit of elitism and true amateurism. Not only because they could afford it, but because they were supposed to cover the cost of sport. Female students and students with different socioeconomic and ethnic background were welcomed later, when university sport was disseminated throughout the world.
