Summer and Winter Universiades.....Spring-board to the Olympics?
The first Summer Universiade, organised in 1959 in Turino Italy, marked a step forward in the evolution of the International University Sport. With the organization of these Summer Games, FISU created an opportunity for students, age 18～27, to meet and compete in sports on a very high level. The first Winter Universiade was organised in 1960 in Chamonix, France. As well the level of participating athletes as the level of the competitions rised enormously since the start in 1959 and 1960.This evolution, mainly in quality of performances, convinced more and more participating countries, universiades could be seen as an ideal preparation for the Olympics. In order to give an answer to this hypothesis, a comparative analysis of participants, gold, silver and bronze medal winners was made between Universiades on the one hand and the Olympics on the other (Verbeke L. 1997).
