Building Ezcellence in University Sport: the University of Alberta Ezperience
Since 1908 the focus of the Golden Bears and Pandas athletics program has been to build excellence in sport and, by doing so, become one of the leading inter-collegiate sport programs in Canada. Commitment of City of Edmonton and University of Alberta is vital to the success of the program-Since 1978 the City of Edmonton and the University of Alberta have joined forces to build facilities jointly and to jointly bid on major sporting attractions with the intent of building the City and University s reputation for excellence in sport and legacy facilities.-This commitment by the City and the University has been a key force in building an athlete-centred environment conducive to the development of sport from the recreational level to the high-performance level.-Facilities such as Foote Field and Saville Sports Centre and events such the Universiade Games (1982) , which we hope to bring to Edmonton again in 2015, the Commonwealth Games (1978) and the Master s Games (2005) put the City and the University on the map as being high-calibre venues for athlete development and world-class competition.
