Cavitating Flow Analysis in a Closed Pump Sump
Pump sumps are widely used in various installations like cooling water systems. The flow conditions in pump suction sump are very complicated, especially, in the surrounding of the pump bell In the present work, the two-fluid model of the two-phase flow has been applied to simulate the three-dimensional cavitating flow. The RNG k-epsilon-kca turbulence model, that is the RNG k-epsilon turbulence model in the liquid phase and kca model in the cavity phase, is used to close the governing Navier-Stokes turbulent equations of two-phase flow. And the computation of the cavitating flow through a model pump sump of closed type has been carried out. The calculated results have been compared with a PIV experiment. Good agreement exhibits the reliability of the numerical simulation model.
