Community Capacity Building and Achievements in GEF Pilot Sites, Shaanzi Province
The pilot sites of the GEF-OP12 Project in Shaanxi was commenced in early 2007 and along with implementation activities great attention has been paid to community capacity building on land degradation control and extension of integrated ecosystem management concept. The community capacity building activities include participatory community development planning, a process in which community members are empowered to make their own decisions for their future prosperity; Farmer Field School (FFS)where farmers improve their ability by identifying, analyzing and addressing problems using their indigenous knowledge; and environmental education and participatory monitoring, aiming to increase farmers voluntary involvement in land degradation control and other environmental rehabilitation activities by increasing their environmental awareness. Implementation of capacity building activities has improved communitys overall capacity and quality, which is of significant contribution to improvement of the local ecological environment, land degradation control and promotion of sustainable community development.
