Developing a Global Strategy to Combat Land Degradation and Promote Sustainable Land Management
Land degradation is truly a global issue, requiring a global strategy not only to control it but also to promote sustainable land management. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has recently (2007)undertaken a strategic review of support to the land degradation focal area, and shortly will undertake another to coincide with negotiations for a fifth replenishment of the GEF for the period 2010-2014. This paper sets out the leading considerations in the strategic review that led to the GEF-4 Land Degradation Focal Area Strategy, as well as the topics that should be taken forward to GEF-5. Sustainable land management (SLM) is the defining approach, emphasising not only sustainability but also fully integrated approaches across landscapes and ecologies.
