National Mechanism for Sharing Land Degradation Monitoring and Evaluation Information

1.Definition and types of land degradation Land degradation refers to the reduction or loses of biological or economic productivity and complexity of rainfed cropland, irrigated cropland, or range, pasture, forest and woodlands resulting from one force or multi-forces. It include: 1) soil erosion caused by wind and/or water; 2) deterioration of the physical, chemical and biological or economic properties of soil; and 3) long-term loss of natural vegetation. Land degradation is represented in reduction or loss of the biological or economic productivity and complexity. It behaves in many types including soil degradation, vegetation degradation, reduction or loss of biodiversity and land use value.
