Application and Practice of Integrated Ecosystem Management (IEM) in Gansu GEF Pastoral Development Project
Integrated Ecosystem Management (IEM) is a new approach and concept in sustainable natural resource management. It integrates ecology, economics, sociology, and management science into one management with a purpose to set up a trans-departmental and transjuristictional management framework. In 2003, the GEF Gansu Pastoral Development Project, which is being implemented by World Bank (WB), first introduced IEM approach and concept into sustainable pastoral development in Qilian Mountains and the Loess Plateau in Gansu Province. This paper discusses the environmental issues and their causes in the Project Areas. It also provides a list of project activities, the outputs of these activities tailored for the Project objectives after a participatory rapid appraisal (PRA) was undertaken, and a summary of the experience of the Project.
