CPRWRPs Approach and Challenges to Slow down Degradation in Mountainous Areas of the Upper Yangtze River Basin
The WB-EU supported Changjiang and Peal River Watershed Rehabilitation Project (CPRWRP) started implementation in late 2006. It receives technical support from the EU-China River Basin Management Programme. Its approach is based on the results of the WB Loess Plateau projects, adjusted for the differences in ecological and socio-economic conditions between the two areas. The project area consists of hilly or mountainous areas in 37 counties of Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing. Many of the selected sub-watersheds have serious degradation, such as rocky desertification. Many of the sub-watersheds are inhabited by minority ethnic groups and the project counties belong to the poorest in the region. In order to promote participation of poor rural households in the project activities, the EU provides a Grant for the Poor.
