Climate Change and Carbon Forestry
Forest is the main body in the terrestrial ecosystem, which absorbs and stores a great deal of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Carbon storage of the global forest is about 77 percent of the global plants. Carbon storage in the forest soil is approximate 39 percent in the global soil. Therefore, deforestation increases CO2 emissions in the greenhouse gas, which is the next important emission source of CO2 emissions compared with fossil fuel and cement. Forest ecosystem plays a very important and irreplaceable role and position in the global carbon circle and balance. The direction of forestry development has been adjusted and transferred for the meet of mitigating the speed of global climate change. Carbon Forestry has been developed in the global since recent years. Carbon forestry includes the following 4 items: (1) to increase forestry activities for absorbing carbon, which refer to forestation, reforestation, recovery degraded ecosystem, and building agroforestry system for improving the storing carbon ability of terrestrial plants and soil. (2) To keep and maintain forest carbon pool, protect carbon storage in the forest ecosystem, reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere.. (3) To strength forest sustainable management, take a series of management measures, decrease carbon emissions, increase carbon sequestration, and get a maximum benefit of carbon storage. (4) To take carbon substitute measures: durable wood products replace energy collective materials, regeneration wood fuel(energy plantation) and logging surplus are used to act as fuel. Clean Development Mechanism was established for mitigating global climate change, building market operational mechanism of forestry carbon sequestration, realizing eco-asset changed into industrial money, in other word, realizing carbon trading. China has a great wide foreground in developing carbon forestry and carrying out carbon sequestration projects of Clean Development Mechanism. Developing carbon forestry plays a great active role in speeding for forestry ecological construction, improving regional ecological environment, reducing poor population, developing forestry bio-material energy. Developing carbon forestry needs to carry out some following researches: forestry carbon sequestration management policy, dynamics of forest carbon source and sink, methodology of carbon inventory, carbon trade. These results will supply experiences, techniques, experiments and models.
