Working Together to Combat Rangeland Degradation
Canada went through a severe grassland degradation period beginning in the 1930s. The majority of these grasslands have now recovered but it took several decades. It required a combination of an increased emphasis on research and technology development, a significantly expanded agriculture extension service, and programs to support water development and improved land management. China is facing a devastating land degradation problem. Desertification and erosion are evident in all grassland areas, and grazing livestock production is not close to its potential nor is it comparable to many developed countries. It is possible to recover the valuable Chinese grasslands but it is going to take a significant change in policy and agriculture production practices. A combination of programs and provision of information to the farm sector is required, as was used in other countries to recover from this situation. Farms must be looked upon as a business, while efficient and productive grazing livestock enterprises must be a focus. It should include all aspects of the production systeM including: grazing systems, livestock management, nutrition, health, record keeping, and marketing. Patience, innovation and a new way of looking at grazing livestock production is required.
