Towards Better Understanding of the Pluralism of QFD Approaches: the Redefined Requirements Definition Space

Many different QFD approaches have been devised and employed successfully in practice. There is a methodological pluralism that may keep QFD alive but may cause misunderstandings and impedes the dissemination of QFD, if the differences between the different approaches appear to be arbitrary. In order to understand the differences better, a framework from Requirements Engineering is employed and adapted for the classification of QFD approaches: The Redefined Requirements Definition Space (R2DS)consists of three dimensions-comprehensiveness, preciseness, and authenticity. Comprehensive QFD, Blitz QFD? or the German Best Practice Model solve conflicts, that emerge in a specific context or culture in a different way and are thus positioned differently within R2DS. The proposed model may serve as a foundation for a contingence model for the context-and culture-sensitive selection of QFD approaches.
