Using Multiple Progression QFDTM for Road mapping Product and Process Related R&D in the Process Industries

In the process industries, a substantial part of product development is not radical new product development but the incremental development and refinement of existing products. Innovation activities are not confined to product development; a substantial proportion of corporate R&D must usually be devoted to process development, application development, applied research and technical support, etc. There is consequently a need to establish both long-term and short-term corporate objectives for a large number of product and process related R&d activities, and further to develop necessary strategic research agendas and project portfolios to reach those targets. This paper begins with a general presentation of Technology Roadmapping, the mpQFD system, and its ability to progress customer demands backwards into the supply chain all the way back to raw-material specifications in a good corporate demand chain management. The usability of the system in various sectors of process industry is illustrated with a short presentation of case study results from utilizing the system successfully in the food industries. Finally, the potential application of the system as a tool for roadmapping and the development of strategic research agendas are tentatively illustrated by an explanatory case from the cement industry.
