Laboratory Testing of AE Precursors of Different Rock Fracture Under Uniazial Compression Condition

In this paper, different rock samples (granite, red granite, marble, black marble, sandstone) were loaded in uniaxial compression, AE and its location technique was applied to study precursors of different rocks fracture, which may be applied as an indicator of rockburst prediction. The experimental results indicate that: AE events occur when the local strength limit in the vicinity of primary crackstress concentration-is reached, however the Ae activity exhibits different characteristics for different rock samples. AE precursors during the failure of different rocks can be easily observed, especially for the granite sample, where the Ae precursor is closely correlated with its stress level and damage. However, for the sandstone, few AE events are generated during initial loading stage, followed by sudden generation of so many AE events as instable failure occurs. From AE events of different rocks samples, it can be found that AE precursors of rock instability are the most reliable tool for predicting rock instability. Meanwhile, increasing strain rate and AE rate is a good in-dictor for approaching the failure. AE location events reflect the crack initiation and propagation during the rock failure process under uniaxial loading condition. At the initial loading stage, the AE events is randomly distributed; with increasing of external stress, the spatial position, direction and spatial curved face of crack propagation in the rock sample are visually reflected by the located AE events, which is very significant to predict the rock failure.
