DEVELOPMENT OF SOIL CONDITIONING AGENT FROM LIGNIN
As it is well known, technological development for the utilization of lignin is a key for the total utilization of lignocellulosic materials, although it is quite limited at this moment except for the utilization as an energy source. In this paper, development of a soil conditioning agent from kraft lignin and bleaching effluent lignin will be discussed. It is important to note that a modified kraft lignin developed in this study has a characteristic nature to remove the toxic effect of Aluminum ion in the soil and may be used for the remediation of acidic soil. Lignin present in the alkaline-oxygen delignification stage waste liquor also shows a positive effect, although the effect is different dependent on their molecular weight and presence of a particular low molecular weight acid, that is oxalic acid. Function mechanism of a modified lignin to remove Aluminum toxicity will be also discussed based on 27Al-NMR spectroscopy.
