BIOTECHNOLOGY-FUTURE KEY FOR TAILORING FIBRES
The forest-based sector is subjected to strong and growing challenges. The ways ahead lie in a higher degree of value adding to existing products and services and in the development of new types of forest-based products. To achieve this requires advanced manufacturing technologies, such as biotechnologies, and taking advantage of scientific achievements. Improved forest-based products, as well as value-added products, are dependent on new or modified manufacturing systems and processes. Biotechnical tools, especially enzymes, are today used to improve traditional pulping and paper manufacturing process stages and product quality. In future, the specificity and uniqueness of enzymes will open up new opportunities for creating novel value added products.
