Mg(OHVBASED PEROXIDE BLEACHING OF TRIPLOID POPULUS TOMENTOSA CARR

Very high brightness CTMP (also called high yield pulp, HYP) grades, such as maple, aspen, are essential furnish to produce high-quality white paper boards. Canada is the dominant country of these HYP hardwood pulps. We started a project to produce high brightness BCTMP from Triploid populus tomentosa can. The results from the magnesium hydroxide-based peroxide bleaching process are reported in this paper. It was found that the brightness target (about 80% ISO) can be reached from the Mg(OH)rbased process for this pulp at a hydrogen peroxide charge of about 4%. At the same H2O2 charge the pulp brightness from the Mg(OH)2-based peroxide bleaching process is 1~2 units lower than that of the NaOH-based peroxide process. On the other hand, the Mg(OH)rbased process leads to much higher bulk of the resulting pulp and much lower COD in the bleaching effluent than those from the NaOH-based process.
