QUALITY OF SOME LOCAL ASIAN OLD NEWSPAPERS (LONP) AS A RAW MATERIAL FOR NEWSPRINT
The deinkability and papermaking potential of some of South East Asian Old Newspaper (LONP) was the focus of this study. The raw materials were collected from a local mill. The experiments were conducted at the same condition for different raw materials. The results indicated that American west-coast old newspaper (AW) or American east-coast old newspaper (AE) was better in deinkability. The observations also indicated that the strength properties were the same for all three samples, although the short fiber share of the LONP was higher. Opacity was better for LONP, but LONP suffered from lower brightness. Effective residual ink concentration (ERIC), ash content and pulp impurity was higher for LONP compared with AW and AE. All these observations suggested that the main drawback of LONP was its higher percentage of ink particles per given volume of newspaper.
