KRAFT PULPING PROPERTIES OF HYBRID TULIP TREE (L. chinense × L. tulipifera)
Fiber morphological characteristics, hemical compositions and kraft pulping properties of hybrid tulip tree L. Chinense×L. tulipofera were investigated. Compared with China tulip tree (Liriondendron chinense (Hemsl.)Sarg.) and yellow poplar (Liriondendron tulipifera Linn.), hybrid tulip wood has a lower content of extractives and a higher content of holocellulose. Its average fiber length is 1.39 mm, which is longer than that of normal hardwood. Kraft pulping of hybrid tulip wood with varying active alkali, cooking temperature and time at temperature shows that it is a suitable hardwood fiber material for chemical pulping. Pulp with comparatively low kappa number and high yield could be obtained under the condition of active alkali charge 16%~18%, cooking temperature 170℃, time 60 min. Cooking temperature takes an important role on pulping selectivity.
