IMPROVING PAPER SHEET PROPERTIES BASED ON LAYER-BY-LAYER DEPOSITION TECHNIQUE
The layer-by-layer deposition technique is one of the molecule self-assembly systems which have been developed as a fabrication tool in the past decade. The technique was employed to modify pulp fiber in the article. The adsorption of polyelectrolytes on cellulose fiber and the effects of polyelectrolytes multilayer on paper sheet properties have been studied. Cationic polyamine (PA) and anionic polyacrylic acid (PAA) were alternately absorbed on the surface of fiber and polyelectrolyte multilayers on fiber were formed. The alternate change of Zeta potential of pulp slurry showed the surface charge reversal during multilayer buildup. The sheets made of modified pulp were also investigated. The result showed that the tensile strength, bursting strength and elastic modulus of paper sheet increased greatly, tearing strength reduced, but apparent density didnt change significantly. The layer-by-layer deposition technique is a promising method to improve paper strength.
