PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF CATIONIC POLYACRYLAMDES WITH HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHTS BY HOFMANN REACTION
Effects of molecular weight of polyacrylamide (PAM), concentration of NaClO and reaction temperature on formation of amino and carboxyl groups during the Hofmann reaction of PAM with high molecular weights were investigated. The amino, carboxyl, and isocyanic groups formed during the reaction were characterized by colloidal titration, IR and XPS spectra. The results showed that the reaction conditions influenced greatly the conversion from amide groups of PAM to amino and carboxyl groups. Cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and amphoteric polyacrylamide (AmPAM) can be prepared by changing the conditions of the Hofmann reaction of PAM. The CPAM or AmPAM made from the Hofmann reaction of PAM were mixed with a topioca starch, and heated to prepare the complexes of starch and the polyamines. The complexes showed satisfactory flocculating capability in the treatment of de-inked wastewater. The effects of molecular weight,-NH3/-COOH ratio in the polyamine and pH of wastewater on the flocculation were investigated.
