THE MODIFICATION OF WHEAT GLUTEN AS WET-STRENGTH AGENT
Current wet-strength agents are synthetic polymers derived from petrochemicals, but they contribute to stickies and contaminants in the recycling of wetstrength papers, which causes more pressure to make reformations. Wheat gluten is one of the most abundant proteins, which is biodegradable and reproducible. After modification, modified gluten has the key functional group for wet strength development carried cationic charges. The gluten resins are significantly cheap and degradable additives for paper dry and wet strength. Dry strength can be increased by 35% and wet strength retention of sheets can reach 21%.
