STUDY ON PAPER STRENGTHENING CAPABILITY OF CARBOXYL METHYL STARCH WITH DIFFERENT DEGREE OF SUBSTITUTE

The carboxyl ethyl starch (CMS) with different degree of substitution (DS) were added to pulp and then the changes of paper dry strength was studied. The range of DS, which has better strengthening effect to paper dry strength, was found. The DS of CMS has a very important influence on the strengthening capability of CMS. The results showed that the paper strengthening capability of CMS with too high or too low DS was not very remarkable. The integrative strengthening effect is relatively good when the DS is 0.594 with tensile strength, folding endurance, tearing index and burst index respectively increase by 52%, 60%, 25% and 106% than blank paper sheet.
