A MODIFIED SMITH PREDICTOR WITH TWO-DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM AND APPLICATION TO A PAPER-MAKING PROCESS
After analyzing the intractable points of paper basis weight (BW) control, a novel Smith predictor with two-degree-of-freedom (TDF) is investigated in this paper. The TDF Smith Scheme consists of two controllers named setpoint tracking controller and disturbance rejection controller, respectively. Each controller is tuned, respectively, by an adjustable parameter only. This provides designers a simple way to tune controllers and allows them to optimize setpoint tracking and disturbance attenuation response simultaneously. Simulations indicate that the proposed scheme has strong robustness, good disturbance rejection ability and satisfactory performance to processes with time delay. The application to BW control in a paper-making process also demonstrates the effectiveness of the modified Smith predictor.
