STUDIES ON PYROLYSIS OF ALKALI LIGNIN

Pyrolysis characteristics and kinetics of alkali lignin separated from kraft black liquor were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of heating rate on the pyrolysis characteristics of alkali Iignin were investigated. The results shows that the non-isothermal weight-loss process of alkali Iignin comprises dehydration, holding, rapid weight-loss and slow weight-loss. The pyrolysis of alkali Iignin occurs in the range of 250℃ and 475℃.The pyrolysis process started earlier and covered the wider temperature range. The percent of mass residua is so high about 30%. The pyrolysis characteristics of alkali lignin are different from those of native lignin. Differential thermogravimetry (DTG) curves of alkali lignin show that the DTG peak appears at higher temperature while increasing the heating rate. Based on the experiments, the Coats and Redfern method was used to analyze the pyrolysis process and to calculate the kinetic parameters at the different heating rate. The pyrolysis process of alkali lignin can be described with one step first-order reaction in the main pyrolysis region.
