LIQUEFACTION OF RICE STRAW USING ETHYLENE CARBONATE WITH SULFURIC ACID
Rice straw was liquefied using ethylene carbonate with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The results showed that ethylene carbonate was difficult to liquefy rice straw without other additives such as water, hydrogen peroxide and other highly polar solvents. In this study, hydrogen peroxide additive (6% of the liquefaction reagent) has significant effect on percent residue reduction by almost 30%. In comparison, water addition had weaker effect on liquefaction, with percent residue reduction from 55% to 33% by adding 8% of the water at 150℃. Also, it was found that an increase of solvent/rice straw ratio to 6: 1 or an extension of liquefaction time to 2 h can significantly reduce the percent residue down to perfect liquefaction in presence of 6% of hydrogen peroxide. The hydroxyl amount and acid amount were 116 mg KOH·g-1 and 1.4 mg KOH·g-1, respectively, which confirmed that using ethylene carbonate with hydrogen peroxide in rice straw liquefaction is suitable for preparation of polyurethane foam.
