CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF TALL OIL FROM JIAMUSI PULPING AND PAPERMAKING MILL

Chemical composition of tall oil from Jiamusi Pulping and Papermaking Mill was studied in this paper. The tall oil sample was first separated into acidic and neutral parts with a diethyl-aminoethyl-sephadex (DEAE-sephadex) gel column, and the acidic and neutral parts were analyzed respectively. The acidic components were esterified with diazomethane and then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by GC and GC-MS. The neutral fraction was also analyzed by GC and GC-MS after silylation with bis-(trimethylsilyl)- trifluoroacetamide. The results indicated that the raw tall oil consisted of 35.0% of neutrals, 58.4% of acids, and 6.6% other substance such as lignin, coloring matter, and ash entrained in the process of recovering the tall oil. In acidic fraction the amounts of resin acids and fatty acids were 50.82% and 44.09% of total acidic fraction. There were 7 types neutral components in the neutral fractions, and the main neutrals were resin alcohols, steroids, and fatty alcohols. Their amounts were 45.8%, 29.8%, and 13.8% of total neutrals respectively.
