PHENOLATION MODIFICATION OF WHEAT STRAW SODA LIGNIN AND ITS UTILIZATION IN LIGNIN-BASED PHENOLIC FORMALDEHYDE RESINS

In this paper, the preparation of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin adhesive modified with phenolated wheat straw soda lignin (WSSL) was studied. Firstly, the structural modification of WSSL by phenolation was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The results showed that WSSL was phenolated, with content of methoxyl groups and the average molecular weight decreasing. Then the reaction parameters of preparing the lignin-based phenol formaldehyde resin (LPF) adhesives, including material ratio, reaction temperature and time and so on, were optimized. Finally, it was found that the performance of the LPf with 70 wt% substitutions of lignin to phenol is comparable to that of the traditional PF.
