DISSOLUTION OF CELLULOSE IN ZnCl2 AQUEOUS SOLUTION
The search of solvents which can swell or dissolve cellulose has attracted an enormous amount of work and has led to the discovery of a series of substances. Among them ZnCl2 aqueous have a lot of distinct advantages: green, stable, and low cost. In this article, dissolving ability of various concentrated ZnCl2 aqueous solutions was studied. The cellulose samples could readily dissolved in 65wt% ZnCl2 aqueous solution without any pretreatment, which has significant meanings for the generation of advanced cellulose materials, and its dissolving ability is related with water amount in the solution. With the higher DP of cellulose the time and temperature of dissolving were increasing. Solutions containing up to 15.0 wt% microcellulose (DP=200) can be formed as viscous pastes in 65.0% ZnCl2 aqueous solution, while the cellulose (DP=600)/65.0% ZnCl2 aqueous solution can be highest to 10.0%. Adding urea or decreasing water could enhance the solvents dissolving ability. By FT-IR regenerated cellulose was compared to original cellulose, which shows that ZnCl2 aqueous solution maybe a direct solvent for cellulose. The Crystal index by FT-IR of regenerated cellulose changed greatly and decrease when the cellulose concentration of solution increased. And primary procedures were put in practice to enhance the dissolving ability for 65wt% ZnCl2 aqueous solution.
