STUDY OF DISPERSING PROPERTIES OF SILICA DIOXIDE USED IN COLOR INK JET PAPER COATING

Silica is favorable pigment for color ink jet paper, and its properties are different from common pigments. In this paper, factors influencing the dispersing process of micrometer silica used in inkabsorption layer and nanometer silica used in imagereceiving layer are discussed, and the optimuM operating conditions are acquired. The proper dispersing conditions for micrometer SiO2 are dispersion concentration 15%, dispersant dosage 0.35%, rotating speed 4000 rpm and dispersing time 30min. The proper dispersing conditions for nanometer SiO2 are dispersion concentration 10%, dispersant dosage 0.7%, rotating speed 7000 rpm and dispersing time 70min. Results show that concentration is the most important factor which influences the dispersing process. There are critical concentrations for both micrometer silica and nanometer silica. Improving rotating speed and prolonging dispersing time are feasible and effective for the improvement of dispersing effect. Furthermore, the difference of dispersing properties and stability of micrometer silica dispersion and nanometer silica dispersion is discussed.
