THE EFFECT OF HIGH FUNCTIONAL CARBOXYLATED STYRENE-BUTADIENE (SBR) LATEX ON PAPER COATING FORMULATIONS
The addition of high functional SBR latex into the top coating layer of coated paperboard and its effects on paperboards properties were investigated carefully in a laboratory scale. The experimental results indicate that high functional latex was excellent in both mechanical and chemical stability, and the prepared top layer coating color took on good performance, good water retention, and lower apparent viscosity under higher shear rates. In the mean time, scanning electron microscope analysis displays that although micro-roughness of the surface of coating layer is great, the surface structure of coating layer is properly compact. The coating layer had few small opening and lower air permeability, which resulted in high both surface binding strength and print gloss, whereas paper gloss, ink absorbency, and stiffness can be maintained.
