Fairness Analysis of Peer-to-Peer Streaming Systems

Based on the recent measurement studies of several large scale Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming systems, there exists extreme un fairness among different peers in the swarm. The upload rate of high bandwidth peers is almost ten times higher than that of low-bandwidth peers. Such unfairness will provide disincentives to high-bandwidth peers and encourage the free-riding behaviors in the system. In this paper, we develop a simple model of heterogeneous P2P streaming systems that takes multi-class peers and peer dynamics into account, analyze the opti mal points of fairness and performance, and identify the tradeoff between fairness and performance. We further discuss the implementation issues to achieve a certain level of fairness in P2P streaming systems. Our work provides useful insights for future designs of P2P streaming systems.
