Optimal Prozy Caching for Peer-to-Peer Assisted Internet On-Demand Video Streaming Services
With the great success of the Internet on-demand video (VoD) streaming services (e.g., YouTube1), the bandwidth and the in curred cost on the video server becomes extremely large. To reduce the servers workload, peer-to-peer(P2P) network and proxy are two meth ods that are proposed by people for caching and distributing the videos. In this paper, we analyze a peer-assisted Internet VoD system with proxy deployed at the gateways of each intranet. We show that optimal caching on the proxy and the peers in the P2P network exists and theoretically prove its optimality. Motivated by our analysis, we further discuss the issues on practically implementing a video caching system for proxy and the peer that can effectively reduce the servers workload for real-world peer-assisted Internet VoD services.
