Investigation of carbon-based materials for bacteria acclimation of cathodic carbon diozide reduction in microbial fuel cells

Illumination-independent microbial cathodes using dissolved carbon dioxide as electron acceptor and carbon-based materials as electrodes were acclimated in the present study.MFC constructed with cathodic graphite felt-anodic graphite fiber, cathodic graphite granule-anodic graphite fiber, cathodic graphite granule-anodic graphite felt, and cathodic graphite granule-anodic graphite granule had various bacteria acclimation periods ranging from 530 h to 970 h. The highest power production of 4.9±0.2 W/m3 and the lowest of 1.8±0.1 W/m3 were obtained from MFCs with cathodic graphite granule-anodic graphite felt and cathodic graphite granule-anodic graphite fiber, respectively.Based on the ButlerVolmer equation, cathodic exchange current density was also discussed.
