Effect of nitrobenzene on power generation performance of the dual-chambered microbial fuel cell
Nitrobenzene (NB) is a representative of nitroaromatic compounds, which contain a strong electron with-drawing group, the nitro group. The effect of NB on the performance of the dual-chambered microbial fuel cell was first investigated in this study. Results showed that with the NB concentrations increasing from 0 to 250 mg/L,the maximum voltage outputs decreased from 670 to 489 mV,the maximum volumetric power densities decreased from 28.57 to 8.47 W/m~3; and the internal resistances increased correspondingly. The Coulombic efficiency was greatly affected by the addition of NB because of the competition between the electricity generation and anaerobic reduction of NB. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles demonstrated that the presence of NB resulted in changes of the dominant bacterial species on the electrodes.
