Simultaneous ozidation of sulfide and acetate in a microbial fuel cell
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) was designed to obtain power production by treating sulfide-rich wastewater. The maximum power density achieved 20±1 W/m~3 V_(Anode)and Coulombic yield was 20±2%.C/S of influent played an important role in elemental sulfur production because of competition between acetate oxidation and element sulfur oxidation in anode. The elemental sulfur production rates of 61~77% were achieved by sulfide oxidation when C/S was higher than 12.50:1 and sulfide concentration was 50 mg/L. Accumulation of elemental sulfur on anodic electrode would be a possible reason resulting in electrode invalidity and operational instability in MFCs.
