Biocathode-enabled Reduction of Nitrobenzene in a Double-chamberd Bioelectrochemical System reactor

For the biotreatment of wastcwater containing nitrobenzene,a pretreatment process aiming at reducing nitrobenzene to anilne is usually adopted so as to greatly decrease the poison to the microorganisms. In this study,we developed an novel pretreatment process,a double-chambered bioelectrochemcial system (BES) with biocathode, which has higher reduction efficiency than that of the conventional process. Acetate was involved as the electricity donor in the anode chamber. The system was operated as fed-batch mode. Althoygh the nitrobenzene removal efficiency (E_(rNh)) was over 99% by both abiotic and biotic cathode, the efficiency of aniline production from nitrobenzene (E_(Nh-A1) achieved by the abiotic cathode was just 73.6% comparing to 93% by the biocathode. As a comparison,an anaerobic biological process could achieved the(E_(Nh-A1)over 90%,but the runing time was 5 times longer than that of the BES. The energy consumption was also calculated, and only 0.73kwh was needed for reducing per kilogram nitrobenzene at the applied voltage of 0.7V.
