POPULARITY-BASED PARTIAL CACHING MANAGEMENT SCHEME FOR STREAMING MULTIMEDIA ON PROXY SERVERS OVER IP NETWORKS
This paper presents an effective popularity and segment based caching management scheme for streaming multimedia on proxy servers. In this scheme, either an initial portion or several parts of multimedia contents are cached on the proxy servers, and the size of the each content varies with popularities of the contents. Under the proposed scheme, initial latency and end-to-end network traffic, which happens to access requested contents, can be reduced significantly. Furthermore, limited storage space on the proxy servers can be utilized efficiently by using a classification policy based on popularities. In accordance with our classification policy, the popularities are also applied by taking access rate of the each content. Our results show a significant reduction of the overall transmission cost over the core and access networks.
