Analysis of methanogenic populations in anaerobic granular sludge in a full-scale UASB reactor treating avermectin wastewater
Methanogenic populations are considered to be important functional populations in microbial community of anaerobic granular sludge and the methanogenic bioactivity of anaerobic granular sludge is the key factor for efficient and stable operation of the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. With the development and application of molecular biological techniques based on 16S rRNA, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the analysis of methanogenic populations in microbial community of anaerobic granular sludge become possible and popular. Anaerobic digestion is widely used in antibiotic wastewater treatment and antibiotics residue in wastewater would probably show some special effects on microbial community of anaerobic granular sludge. Then PCR-DGGE and FISH were used to analyze methanogenic populations of anaerobic granular sludge in a full-scale UASB treating avermectin wastewater in this study to investigate antibiotic effect on microbial community.
