Equilibrium Partitioning Relationship between Toluene and Typical Surfactants

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) partitioning into surfactant micelles influences the vapor-liquid equilibrium of VOCs in surfactant solutions, batch headspace experiments were performed to acquire apparent Henrys constants (Hc) of toluene in the presence of SDS, TX114 and CTMAB at temperature ranging from 25 to 40℃. The results demonstrated that Hc values were significantly reduced in the presence of all three surfactants over their critical micelle concentrations (CMC). The surfactant influenced on HC according to the following series: SDS< CTMAB< TX114. The relationship between Hc and surfactant concentration (X) was deduced and validated through the equation: Hc=H/(1+K(X-CMC)). The Hc increased markedly with temperature for all solutions, and can be fitted as a function of temperature with vant Hoff equation.
