Isolation of Poly-β-hydrozyalkanoate (PHA) production bacteria using inezpensive substrate
1. Introduction Poly-?hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is polyesters accumulated by various bacteria under unbalanced growth conditions when the carbon substrate is in excess of other nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus or growth factors1-4. PHA has properties similar to petrochemical-based plastics, moreover, it is truly biodegradable5. However, the use of PHA in a wide range of applications has been hampered by their high production cost compared with petrochemical-based plastics7,8. Therefore an alternative way to reduce PHA production cost is to use inexpensive carbon sources as feed stocks for the bacteria12-15.
