Multi-parameter based dosing control as an efficient tool for improved phosphate removal by coagulation

Many biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are required to improve their phosphate removal efficiencies according to the national and regional legislations. The chemical coagulation is probably the most cost-efficient methods to retrofit existing biological WWTPs to achieve these goals, compared with upgrading with biological phosphate removal. However, the retrofitting to be cost efficient two important conditions must be met: (a) it is necessary to coagulate the wastewater which are well separated form the biomass which will otherwise require excessive amounts of coagulants due to extremely high MLSS (b) an efficient coagulant dosing control system which estimates the optimal dosing based on real-time monitoring of key parameters influencing the coagulant consumption.
