Role of Dissolved and Solid Organic Matter on Aqueous Sorption of Phenanthrene to Natural Sorbents

The sorption behavior was determined for a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), phenanthrene (PHN), from water to original soil and sediment samples and physical and chemical treated subsamples in various contact time. The hydrophobic indexes of humic substances dissociating from sorbent samples and subsamples and dissolving into water phase were measured by liquid-state 1H NMR and the chemical composition of the humic acid sample was determined by solid-state CPMAS 13C NMR along with element analysis. The sorption experiments show that the sequestrations of PHN on both untreated and treated sorbents are bimodal and the modified Freundlich parameters vary significantly between short (1-2 d) and long contact time. These data evidence that there exist two distinct sorption domains in solid sorbents and the sorption modes and mechanisms are different between these two domains. At short contact time, the sorption parameters are positive correlation with sorbent DOC content and hydrophobic index of dissolved humic substances, possibly due to the similar chemical structure of dissolved humics to water-wet surfaces of particles and the strong interaction between them. The uptake capacity for long contact time may be dependent on the aromatic organic matter contained in solid sorbents. These observations suggest that the contact time should be taken into account in the sorption examination and the completely understanding of sorption mechanisms requires the chemical information not only on the solid organic matter but also on dissolved humic substances.
