Ezperimental Evaluation of Biomass Burning in the Pearl River Delta Region: Part I-Emission Factors and Emission Inventory
1. Introduction Though several researchers have found evidence that urban air quality in the PRD region are influenced by biomass burning (BB) emissions, the contribution of BB emission to major air pollutants has yet to be determined exactly. Hence, the collection of regional activity data and emission factors specific to a type of crop residue is needed to improve accuracy in the estimation of air pollutant emissions from BB. This paper reports on a laboratory measurement of BB and presents emission factors for particulate and trace gases from open burning of representative crop residues in the PRD region, including rice straws and sugarcane. Field investigation on proportions of open burned agricultural crop residues were presented,as well as consumption of firewood and crop residues as biofuel. The BB emission inventory and contributions to local ambient air quality were also explored in the region. The,emissions allocation (3km×3km) and emission uncertainty for major pollutants are presented and discussed.
