Growth properties of new particle formation in the summer of Beijing
1 Introduction New particle formation (NPF) events, one of the important sources of ambient particles, have also attracted more and more attentions in recent years,as they are observed frequently worldwide. The species that participate in the nucleation process and subsequent growth are not known with certainty, but atmospheric observations and laboratory simulation suggest that sulfuric acid often plays an important role. Coagulation is also very important for the NPF events. The criterion for discerning NPF events is the burst of the nucleation mode particle number concentration. This paper focuses on growth rates of freshly nucleated particles during the Campaign of Atmospheric Research in Beijing and Surrounding Areas 2008 (CAREBeijing 2008). Sulfuric acid condensation will contribute to particle growth and it is supposed to be neutralized by ammonia to ammonium sulfate. Intramodal coagulation among nucleation mode particles and extramodal coagulation between the nucleation mode particles and preexisting particles are also analyzed.
